headphones...what do you use, looking for some with specific requirements

Here's the scoop: last month, I upped & moved, far, far away. My cell works, but it's on 100% roaming. Thus, I bought a Skype membership. $30/year, and I can call anywhere in the US & Canada an unlimited amount of time.

Another $30, and I snagged a phone number for loved ones and friends to "call me". It even has voicemail....

...but I digress, this isn't about Skype (sorry Steveo), it's about headsets. I picked up a set of Plantronics because, well my laptop sound card died, and I needed a USB sound card as when I got here, I only had the laptop. Now that I've got a desktop setup and am gaming again (as well as skyping from it), I realized how much it sucks to be tethered to a wired headset.

Can anybody recommend a wireless headset that also has a built in microphone? I don't really care how it connects to the PC, but would prefer RF (via USB?) or Bluetooth would be fine (...if you can recommend a bluetooth adapter for the PC I can attach that'll talk with it).

As long as it's a good comfy setup, I've no problem spending appropriate coinage for this. Hopefully, somebody can recommend something. =)

Oh...and keep fraggin'.

Lastly....anybody remember which A3D member (or maybe was just PXL owner?) that lived in Alaska and what part he was in?

Thanks,

wildwolf

Plantronics p590 is a nice bluetooth headset. Works great for voip and the mic is like a bluetooth phone headset (so you don't end up breathing in their ear). Only thing is, since bluetooth only has 2 audio streams you can either use them for stereo OR mono with mic... not both.

Thanks. That's just what I'm looking for I think. I'll look at it. I don't need stereo with mic since for that it'll just be phone calls. When gaming/watching TV...I can use the stereo, right...or is it a hassle to switch or something?

I couldn't find it at newegg with a quick search, but I did find this interesting one from Creative that I might just try.

The best wired headset I have found is the Sony PS2 online USB headset by Logitech ! I got mine for 10 bucks shipped on eBay, works as a USB mic and headphones but with only one ear set.

Great unit and CHEAP !

You know thats the thing, every wireless set I have bought got returned same day because they work so poorly. I thought about a Bluetooth one without a mic just for listening to iTunes on my Macbook at work so I don't have to deal with the wires, but it's hard to find a decent pair at good price.

I got a Turtle Beach X1 for the Xbox 360, works pretty good, but again, wired

It's easy to switch between on the p590 since you can turn off the mic with a built in switch on the mic. The quality is quite good up to about 15-30 feet. If you use it for in game play you would want to make the headset only do sound for voice chat (like teamspeak) using the options to change what input device/output device it uses is selected for the plantronics. Then in Windows you make sure normal playback sounds are still defaulting to your speakers... this way you only hear voice on the headset and it doesn't matter it's in mono.

I also have a really nice Logitech wired pair (model a-0356a) which is great. It's USB and appears in windows also as a 2nd audio device (so it's possible to isolate voice to the headset). It was something like 40$ a couple of years ago.

It's helpful in coop games to use these headsets but I really don't feel as compelled in normal "team" MP games.

I don't have speakers....the only audio I get is through whatever headset I have....but thanks for the additional information.

I bought the wife & I a set of these about two weeks ago. She sent mine after playing with her set for about 2 weeks. I got it Saturday.

I live in a 3 floor apartment (basement, main floor, upstairs) where I spend most of my time in front of my PC upstairs. I can get a signal in the basement when I'm doing laundry and wife said she can still hear me just fine.

So far, I must say that I love them and they are exactly what I have been looking for. You plug them into a high power USB port. The USB "puck" has a power cord that plugs into the headset to charge it. Says it lasts several hours on a full chare, but I've never used for more than about 5 or 6 in a row yet. The power/usb cables are kinda short to hook up & charge while you chat, but it is possible if needed.
