Assassin 3D drivers for XP (or even NT???) (Not Panther XL)

Hi. I have had the idea to use a trackball for gaming for a few months now. First, I failed by purchasing a Nyko Classic Trackball controller for Playstation which I thought would be compatible with my PSX-->USB converter. It wasn't, and is now collecting dust. I found an old Assassin 3D at goodwill for $2 yesterday and I was really excited. It came with drivers but they are only 95 and DOS. I can't find ANY drivers at all online for it. I tried hooking up to my gameport and installing a joystick but it does not work. I also tried the Panther drivers I found here -- http://www.stevehailer.com/smile/contact.htm , just to see if they would work... They did not.

I'm a little disappointed here. Does anyone know if it is even possible to get this thing working with XP?

I read that the iOne Libra 90 is actually the same hardware as the Assassin... If all else fails, I guess I can try to sell these two obsolete pieces of crap (like anyone would buy them) and get one of those.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah the old drivers are Win98 or older only, I know of no way to make the Assassin 3D or Panther non-XL work in Windows XP or greater.

Mad Catz never released the source code of the Assassin 3D so we can't even make our own.

Sorry for no help...

Yeah Scott, by all means go for a Libra if you want the same ergonomics of the A3D. I'm writing this big review on trackballs for gamereplays.org, and grabbed a couple Libras 90. It's absolutely the same thing as the original A3D/Panther. Same steel bearings, same heavy ball etc. Just bear in mind they also sport the same low 800 DPI resolution as the original models. Which means you'll miss the resolution if you go anywhere above 640x480. Ahem. If you want something optical with decent 1600 dpi rez you could go for the kensington expert mouse (that's got no steel bearings and a light ball but does a very good job) or the new laser model from CST (http://www.clearlysuperiortech.com/). Haven't tried one of those babies yet, but the former model had everything (great bearings, weight, etc) but the resolution and top-notch ergonomics. In any case, check out trackballworld for your needs and drop me a line if you have any question about joysticks, etc, to go with it. Good hunt! :)
